Once upon a time in a small village nestled deep within the lush countryside, there lived a young woman named Amina. Amina was known throughout the village for her vibrant spirit, kind heart, and her innate ability to bring joy to everyone she encountered. She spent her days tending to the fields, caring for the livestock, and assisting the village elders. Her laughter was as infectious as her smile, and the villagers adored her.

Amina had big dreams for herself and her future. She yearned to explore the world beyond the village and receive an education. Her heart was set on becoming a nurse, to help heal the sick and bring comfort to those in pain. However, she knew that her dreams would have to wait, for she had a family to care for.

Amina was married to Ali, a hardworking man who shared her dreams and supported her ambitions. They had two beautiful children, a son named Hassan and a daughter named Layla. Amina loved her family dearly but knew that bringing more children into their small home would make it even harder for her to pursue her dreams.

One day, as she sat beneath the shade of a giant baobab tree, Amina heard whispers of a new arrival in the village – a health worker named Fatima. Fatima had been trained in modern healthcare practices and contraception methods. She had come to the village to educate the women about family planning and contraception.

Intrigued, Amina decided to attend one of Fatima’s information sessions. There, she learned about the various methods of contraception available, their benefits, and how they could help her take control of her reproductive health. Fatima also explained how contraception could empower Amina to have the family she desired while still pursuing her dreams.

With this newfound knowledge, Amina approached Ali and shared her hopes and dreams. She explained that by using contraception, they could plan the size of their family and ensure that Amina could pursue her education without the added responsibility of more children.

Ali, who loved and respected Amina, listened attentively. He understood the wisdom in her words and agreed to support her decision. Together, they visited Fatima to discuss their options. After careful consideration, they chose a suitable contraceptive method that aligned with their goals.

As the months passed, Amina continued to care for her family and work in the fields, but she also started attending evening classes, taking steps toward her dream of becoming a nurse. She was able to allocate more time and resources to her education, thanks to the contraception they had chosen.

Years went by, and Amina’s dreams became a reality. She became a dedicated nurse, tending to the sick and bringing comfort to those in need. She also shared her knowledge of contraception with other women in the village, helping them take control of their own lives and pursue their aspirations.

Amina’s story spread far and wide, becoming an inspiring tale of empowerment and determination. She proved that with access to contraception, women could shape their destinies, fulfill their dreams, and make the world a better place.

Like Amina there are many women who face the challenges she faced before being exposed to contraception methods by the nurse. In a world where access to quality sexual and reproductive healthcare is often a challenge, TOMBEY, an innovative adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health (SRH) project, is breaking barriers and creating a brighter future for women and young people in Nigeria. Designed to provide safe, non-discriminatory access to quality, affordable, and appropriate SRH information and services, TOMBEY is a beacon of hope and change for women like Amina.

TOMBEY’s holistic approach to SRH access is built on four pillars: a website, a mobile application, mobile chat, and Short Message Service (SMS). Together, these platforms serve as a lifeline for adolescents and youths, ensuring they receive the information and support they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.

Education is empowerment, and TOMBEY recognizes this fundamental truth. Through its website and mobile application, TOMBEY offers comprehensive sexuality education that equips young people with the knowledge they need to navigate the complexities of SRH. From understanding their bodies to making responsible choices, TOMBEY ensures that no question goes unanswered and no topic is left unexplored.

TOMBEY goes beyond education; it facilitates access to essential SRH services, including life-saving contraceptives. By using the platform, young people can locate adolescent-friendly centers in their vicinity, ensuring that quality care is never out of reach. This ease of access transforms the lives of countless women and young people, granting them control over their reproductive health and future.

In the digital age, interactivity is key. TOMBEY understands that young people need more than just information; they need a supportive community. TOMBEY’s interactive chat platforms provide a safe space for adolescents to ask questions, seek guidance, and share experiences. These platforms foster a sense of belonging and ensure that no one feels alone on their SRH journey.

To access the wealth of information and services TOMBEY offers, all it takes is a visit to www.tombey.org. This web portal serves as a gateway to a world of empowerment, where young people can take charge of their SRH and make choices that will positively impact their lives.

TOMBEY’s mission is clear—to empower women and young people with the knowledge, skills, and access they need to make informed choices and lead productive lives. By bridging the gap in SRH education and services, TOMBEY is lighting the path forward, not just for today’s generation but for generations to come.

In a world where too many are denied the information and services they deserve, TOMBEY is a shining example of what is possible when technology, education, and empowerment come together. It’s a reminder that, no matter the challenges, access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare is not a privilege but a fundamental human right. Through TOMBEY, this right is being realized, and women and young people are finding the support they need to thrive.

In today’s world, the ongoing struggle for gender equality has highlighted the urgent need to empower girls. Recognizing this critical priority, girl empowerment programs have emerged as a vital force in fostering their self-confidence, offering opportunities, and breaking societal constraints. The PAVE project, in particular, has played a profound role in transforming the lives of girls by providing them with an array of positive outcomes that not only benefit them individually but also contribute to the creation of a more equitable and prosperous society. The impact of the PAVE project on young girls has been nothing short of transformative. By participating in this initiative, girls have gained the power to make informed decisions in various aspects of their lives, ranging from health and personal development to career and financial matters. The project’s comprehensive approach addresses key issues crucial to the well-being and success of these young girls.

PAVE Progress Tree

Let’s delve into some of the significant topics covered:

Health and Well-being: The PAVE project places a strong emphasis on the significance of physical and mental health, equipping girls with essential knowledge about understanding their body, nutrition, exercise, self-care practices and hygiene, practicing abstinence and mental resilience. By understanding how to prioritize their well-being, these girls are better equipped to lead healthy and balanced lives, both physically and emotionally.

Personal Development: Through the PAVE project, young girls are encouraged to explore their passions, develop their talents, and build self-confidence. They are exposed to various personal development strategies such as goal-setting, time management, effective communication, and problem-solving skills. Armed with these tools, they are empowered to unlock their full potential and pursue their aspirations with unwavering determination.

Career Guidance: The project offers comprehensive career guidance, exposing girls to a diverse range of career options and equipping them with the skills necessary for success. By providing mentorship, insights into different industries, guidance on professional networking, and information about educational opportunities, the PAVE project empowers girls to make informed decisions about their future and opens doors to exciting career prospects.

Leadership, Mentoring, and Advocacy: Empowerment programs like PAVE foster leadership skills, encouraging girls to become active agents of change. By providing platforms for participation, mentorship, and training in public speaking and advocacy, the project instills in girls the confidence to raise their voices and champion causes they believe in. Empowered girls emerge as leaders who challenge gender-based discrimination and work towards building inclusive societies. Their involvement in decision-making processes ensures that diverse perspectives are represented, leading to more equitable outcomes.

Financial Literacy: Recognizing the importance of financial empowerment, the PAVE project dedicates efforts to educate girls on financial literacy and money management skills. They learn about budgeting, saving, investing, and the value of financial independence. By developing a strong foundation in financial knowledge, these young girls are better prepared to navigate financial challenges and secure their economic well-being, thus breaking the cycle of dependency.

In conclusion, girl empowerment programs have proven to be transformative in unlocking the potential of girls worldwide. By nurturing self-confidence, providing education, promoting health and well-being, fostering leadership and advocacy skills, and enabling economic empowerment, these programs create a ripple effect that benefits individuals, communities, and societies as a whole. The PAVE project, in particular, has acted as a catalyst for positive change, equipping young girls with the necessary tools and knowledge to thrive in various aspects of their lives. By expanding their minds and instilling a profound sense of empowerment, the project has transformed these girls into confident individuals capable of making informed decisions and achieving their dreams. By empowering girls, we pave the way for a more equitable and prosperous future where every girl can thrive, fulfill her dreams, and make meaningful contributions to the world.

In the bustling metropolis of Lagos, Nigeria, a spirited and determined young girl named Toluwani embarked on a journey fueled by ambition. Nestled in the prestigious Ibeju Lekki district, a haven of modernity and ceaseless activity, Toluwani was the resilient fourth child in a loving family of six, each bearing their own aspirations and dreams. From an early age, Toluwani harbored an unwavering passion for the realm of auto-mechanical engineering. She was entranced by the intricate inner workings of cars and possessed an innate knack for fixing things. Yet, as she completed her secondary education, her dreams seemed to wane beneath the weight of opposition from her parents.

In a society where deeply entrenched gender roles prevailed, it was rare to witness girls venturing into male-dominated domains. Toluwani’s parents, adhering to societal norms, voiced their apprehensions about their daughter pursuing a career as a “lady mechanic.” They believed it to be an ill-suited profession for her. Toluwani’s plight was not an isolated case, as numerous adolescent girls encountered similar barriers in their quest to follow their passions. Society often acted as a deterrent, discouraging them from treading into territories traditionally reserved for men, effectively constraining their potential and aspirations. Moreover, these barriers permeated into the realm of sexual and reproductive health, where girls were frequently denied the agency to make informed decisions.

Fortuitously, Toluwani’s path underwent a transformative shift when she crossed paths with the PAVE PROJECT Team. This pioneering initiative was dedicated to empowering adolescent girls and dismantling the constraints that held them back. Guided by the unwavering support of the PAVE PROJECT, Toluwani discovered a platform that enabled her to articulate her aspirations and persuade her parents to embrace her dreams. As Toluwani embarked on her journey to becoming a Lady auto-mechanical engineer, she symbolized the resilience and determination that defined the PAVE PROJECT. Her unwavering pursuit of her dreams became a source of inspiration for other girls in her community, sparking a desire within them to challenge unjust traditions and societal expectations.

The PAVE PROJECT had set them on a path of empowerment, enabling them to break free from the chains of inequality and create a world where every girl could dream without limitations. Through immersive workshops, invaluable mentorship, and encounters with accomplished female role models, participants of the PAVE PROJECT were imbued with inspiration to defy cultural norms that impeded their progress for a brighter future, where the dreams and ambitions of all adolescent girls would be recognized and nurtured. Toluwani and her fellow beneficiaries are emerged as beacons of hope for their peers, fearlessly breaking free from the constraints imposed by society.

Malaria is a significant public health concern in Nigeria, accounting for a large number of deaths and illnesses every year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nigeria accounted for 27% of the estimated global malaria cases in 2020.

This statistic highlights the significant burden of malaria in Nigeria and the urgent need for effective prevention and treatment measures to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with this disease.

A non-Governmental organization, HACEY with support from Access Corporation has organized medical outreaches across four states in Nigeria to combat malaria.

The organization made this known while listing the states for the outreach to include; Lagos, Delta, Kaduna and Akwa Ibom. The event reached over 5,000 households with lifesaving information on preventing malaria. They distributed over 3,000 Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) and 3,000 IpTp to pregnant women with the aim to help them prevent malaria and similar issues in their communities.

Malaria transmission in Nigeria is year-round, with higher transmission rates during the rainy season (May-October) in the south and the dry season (November-April) in the north. Nigeria is one of 10 African countries that accounted for 76% of global malaria cases and deaths in 2020.

The Executive Director of HACEY, Rhoda Robinson speaking on the occasion of the outreach said, Nigeria accounts for 23% of global malaria cases, with children under five years of age and pregnant women being the most vulnerable groups.

To address the issue of malaria in Nigeria, we emphasize the need for effective prevention and treatment measures, including the use of insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor residual spraying, and environmental management to reduce mosquito breeding sites. Prompt diagnosis and treatment with effective antimalarial medications, such as artemisinin-based combination therapies, are also essential.

Robinson points out that controlling malaria in Nigeria will require a coordinated and sustained approach involving multiple stakeholders, including the government, healthcare providers, community leaders, and international organizations. To achieve this, long-term investments in health systems strengthening, research and development, and community engagement are necessary to ensure that effective prevention and treatment measures reach those who need them most.”

Also speaking about the program, Access Corporation’s Head of Sustainability, Omobolanle Victor-Laniyan said, “Over the years we have supported interventions focused on ensuring that no child or woman in Nigeria is exposed to unhealthy environment or malaria. We are committed to the promise of combatting and ultimately ending Malaria in Nigeria and we believe when women and children are safe they are able to perform optimally and this will close the marginalization gap in society.

“We encourage more private sector organizations to complement government efforts by investing in high-impact projects and interventions aimed at combating malaria.”

Overall, addressing the challenges of malaria control in Nigeria will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders and sustained commitment to implementing evidence-based interventions that are accessible and affordable to those most at risk.

The post Reducing Maternal Mortality in Nigeria: Insights from Project Agbebi’s Multi-Faceted Approach appeared first on HACEY.

]]>
Nigeria has been grappling with the daunting challenge of maternal health, as it continues to have one of the highest maternal mortality rates worldwide. Sadly, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the nation recorded an estimated maternal mortality ratio of 512 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2017, resulting in the demise of about 58,000 Nigerian women yearly due to pregnancy and childbirth complications.

This high rate of maternal mortality in Nigeria can be attributed to several factors such as insufficient access to quality healthcare, limited education on maternal health, cultural practices that discourage women from seeking medical care, poverty, inadequate infrastructures, weak health systems, and many more.

In a bid to abate these challenging concerns and improve maternal health outcomes in Nigeria, HACEY introduced Project Agbebi, a multi-faceted initiative aimed at addressing maternal health issues. Project Agbebi strives to improve access to quality healthcare by strengthening healthcare professionals’ capacity, educating women on maternal health, providing training for healthcare workers, and addressing cultural barriers that hinder women from seeking maternal health care.

The project has recorded some encouraging milestones, including a medical outreach and training for expectant mothers across 30 communities in Osun, Ogun, and Oyo states, where beneficiaries expressed immense gratitude for the lessons learned and support received. Over 3000 birthing kits have been distributed to beneficiaries of the project. Some of who have been very grateful and shared their touching experiences and various insights regarding maternal health care. here’s what some of the beneficiaries had to say;

Beneficiaries of Project Agbebi

“Thanks to the excellent care I received from my healthcare provider during my pregnancy, I was able to deliver a healthy baby. I am grateful for the attention and support I received throughout my pregnancy, which made all the difference in ensuring a positive outcome.” – Sarah, mother of one.

“Honestly, I did not know I have been missing out by not coming to ANC at the health facility. In my family, we prefer to go to the traditional birth attendants to give birth but my friend told me that their community leader said they must come to the clinic because there is something for them, so I decided to follow her.  I have learnt a lot from the training sessions and thank you for the birthing kits, I’m very grateful,”-Aminat Ahmed from Oyo state.

“I did not plan to come for the program before because my body was aching and I just wanted to sleep, then go to the market to get some of the things I’d be needing for the delivery. But one of the elders in our community encouraged everyone to come. Thank God I came, because the training was very insightful and I am glad I don’t have to buy marking tosh again, I can use the money to get something else,”-Iyabo Agboola, Oyo State.

“Today, I got to know I can open an account for my kids (babies for that matter) and nothing will happen to their money. These are some of the insights I gathered from the training sessions and other key maternal information,”-Ganiyu Nafisat, Osun state.

“I am happy I attended today’s antenatal. The teaching was fun and I want to say a big thank you to the NGO and access bank for making today happen for us. I like the financial part where we are taught how to save for ourselves and the baby and not focus on things that don’t matter because we want to impress our neighbors. I also want to say thank you for the birthing kit,”-Folake Enochi from Ogun state.

Access Corporation’s investment in Project Agbebi serves as a model for other private sector organizations to follow, especially in areas where the government’s capacity to address critical social issues is limited. Collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors are essential to achieving sustainable development and improving the well-being of communities in Nigeria.

Overall, the comprehensive efforts of Project Agbebi’s initiative are expected to mitigate the maternal mortality scourge in Nigeria. Achieving this feat will require the various stakeholders’ collaboration, including the government, healthcare providers, and community leaders, working collaboratively to provide long-lasting solutions that would improve maternal health outcomes in Nigeria.

Leading Non-governmental organization, HACEY Health Initiative has hosted its 3rd annual end FGM conference themed: For Her Rights: Scaling Innovative Human Rights approaches in FGM Interventions.

HACEY Host 3rd Annual EndFGM Conference To Advocate Eradication of Female Genital Mutilation
Speakers at the 3rd Annual EndFGM Conference

This was hosted in commemoration of International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation to highlight the need for a human rights perspective in developing innovative approaches to understanding and ending FGM.

The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including policy-makers, representatives from United Nations organizations, law enforcement agencies, media outlets, international non-governmental agencies, civil society organizations, and members of the EndFGM Alliance.

The Executive Director, Rhoda Robinson while giving her welcome address noted that more than 3 million girls are estimated to be at risk of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) every year, with rising cases of FGM being carried out on infants and girls under 15. With the looming population boom and loss of ground that advocacy efforts have suffered because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this number may very well double within the next decade. With less than a decade to go to achieve the SGD 5 target of eliminating all harmful practices, including FGM, there is an unarguable need to accelerate our efforts to end violence against women and girls.

She stated that “The event is in commemoration of the 2023 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation and aimed at recognizing the success recorded in eradicating FGM from society and creating more awareness to do more to completely eradicate the harmful practice of FGM. In three years the conference has brought together dignitaries to discuss a stock-taking improvement of our interventions to ending FGM by 2030. This year’s conference brings together thought leaders to the platform as we look at progress towards achieving the 2030 target, bringing to the table the discussions on protecting the rights of women and girls to live free from violence as a fundamental right”.

“Since the beginning of the StopCut Project in 2020, HACEY has continually coordinated efforts among key stakeholders and actors in high incident communities across southwest Nigeria towards ending FGM, and promoting the awareness and implementation of laws that protect women and girls. As part of this effort, this annual conference brings together stakeholders to take stock of our progress and chart new ways to amplify our impact in ending FGM.”

Nigeria’s UN CEDAW Representative, Mme. Esther Eghobamien-Mshelia while delivering her keynote address stated that FGM is considered under the Child Right Convention, article 34 and the CEDAW Convention, article 5 as one of the gross violations of human rights, a demonstration of violence against women and a practice that needs to be eliminated. She stated that dealing with FGM requires a coordinated approach and commended HACEY Health Initiative for its proactive response in this area. Poor levels of public support and engagement in the conservation of natural resources are frequently caused by poor understanding and sensitization of the benefits of land restoration, low resource regulation, among others. Trees are the lungs of the earth. As they provide oxygen for humans. They take in carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen, both of which are vital for human activities.

Tree Planting Exercise To Inspire Environmental Awareness

Tree planting offers many environmental benefits, some of which include; They absorb pollutant gases, odors and act as a filter as little particulates get trapped in leaves; Trees reduce the risk of erosion by storing water and breaking the force of rain as it falls; Trees also absorb sound and reduce noise pollution; they contribute to boosting biodiversity as they become a food source and natural habitat for wildlife and trees provide natural cooling effects.

While some indirect economic benefits of trees are that they help to reduce energy consumption, which in turn influences demands placed on the infrastructure of utility companies, thus directly influencing costs of products for consumers.

Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency states that a mature acre of trees can yearly provide oxygen for 18 people. This implies that Mature trees can absorb roughly 48 pounds of CO2 a year and release enough oxygen to sustain human beings.

In celebration of the 2023 Bacardi founders’ day, the organization in partnership with HACEY Nigeria planted over 300 trees in Lagos state.

The trees were planted across a 4-kilometer land, with a spacing of 10 meters in between each plant along Epe ijebu-ode expressway. Community members accepted to plant these trees in front of their plots and on their lands to support the vision of promoting a greener community.

The species of trees planted were the Masquerade tree and the Ficus Shrub. The Masquerade trees are known as the lofty evergreen trees, commonly planted due to its effectiveness in alleviating noise pollution. The tree is known to grow over 30 feet in height and if allowed to grow naturally (without trimming the branches out for decorative reasons) grows into a normal large tree with plenty of shade. On the other hand, the ficus shrub trees may look like basic plants with narrow and droopy glossy green leaves, but they are tropical specimens that improve the quality of air. They are popular houseplants, effective in purifying air indoor.

Staff members of Bacardi, community leaders, community members, youth leaders and community youth-based organizations hosted the tree planting exercise. The organizations implemented the environmental and educational impact project in Epe Local Government area of Lagos state with the aim to save the planet.

With the tree planting exercise, the annual Carbon Sequestration Capacity of the trees planted varies. In one year, the Masquerade tree will offset likewise the Ficus shrub. At 0 – 5 years old the masquerade tree will offset 5, 183 kg (5.1 tonne) C02 equivalent. While the ficus tree in the same period will offset 80kg (0.08 tonne). In one year, the 200 Masquerade trees planted will offset 2, 073, 400 kg (2073 tonne) C02 equivalent, while the 100 Ficus trees planted in the same period will offset 16, 700 Kg C02 (16.7 tonne) equivalent.

The community representative, Hon. Azeez applauded the initiative, adding that the project will inspire the community to care for and protect the environment.

He further stated that the tree planting exercise has given the community an opportunity to participate in the greener Lagos campaign while pledging support on behalf of the community to take care of the plants and ensure they serve the purpose for which they were planted.

Meanwhile, a community member, Ademola Abass said the tree planting program has given him the opportunity to plant beside his stall, and that it would give shed and fresh air whenever he is working.

In all 32 communities’ volunteers were trained, over 200 households were engaged and 6000 liters of water were provided for watering and preservation of the trees planted in day 1, and site clearance was carried out for the plants.
